The countryside is facing problems related to environmental, lifestyle, and labor changes; there is a decline in the number of people taking up agricultural work. Upon entering Tashe township, it is not hard to find rental or for sale signs on unused farmlands. Most people take these sorts of arrangements for granted, but it is nearly impossible to recover a piece of land once it’s built upon. “Disappearance of the fields” is based on my mother’s memories of a forgotten field in my grandfather’s hometown, a recording of actual and continual disappearance of land in real life. Mother speaks with me in her normal working environment, her words are light in an as-a-matter-of-fact sense, “It’s nothing, just life.” So this is how it ends, with us neglecting to see, giving in to life, in the end silencing the breath of land.
